Mitzvah Projects

Ohev Shalom creates and facilitates a myriad of service, tzedakah and mitzvah projects over the course of the year. Below are just some of the activities congregants have recently participated in:

High Holiday Food Drive (Sept./Oct.)
Our annual food drive benefits the Mitzvah Pantry, the Bernadine Center, and Wesley House. Over the weeks between Rosh Hashanah and Sukkot, we ask for, collect and sort bags of food, baby supplies and toiletries for those in need. All ages are encouraged to participate.

LifeCenter Dinners
(First Sundays of Jan., March, May, July, Sept., Nov.)
We bring dinner to the LifeCenter, a shelter and soup kitchen in Upper Darby, PA, and serve the meal to 150 clients. Adults and teens over the age of 12 are invited to help.

Adopt a Family (Dec.)
Each year, Ohev Shalom “adopts” two or more families through Pathways PA – an organization that helps families who have experienced abuse and neglect achieve independence – and fulfills their holiday wish lists. This project is appropriate for all ages.

Mishloach Manot (Feb./Mar.)
As Purim approaches, congregants get together to decorate and assemble bags of goodies (including hamentashen made by our Sisterhood) to distribute to synagogue members. Everyone is invited to share in the joy of Purim!

Reading Partners (Ongoing, Monday afternoon 4:00 – 5:00 pm)
Every week, teens and adults read to elementary school students who are participating in an after-school program at the Family Management Center in Chester. Volunteers sign up whenever their schedule permits.
